Summary

Book Two in the Magnificent Dune Chronicles--the Bestselling Science Fiction Adventure of All Time

Dune Messiah continues the story of Paul Atreides, better known--and feared--as the man christened Muad'Dib。 As Emperor of the Known Universe, he possesses more power than a single man was ever meant to wield。 Worshipped as a religious icon by the fanatical Fremens, Paul faces the enmity of the political houses he displaced when he assumed the throne--and a conspiracy conducted within his own sphere of influence。

And even as House Atreides begins to crumble around him from the machinations of his enemies, the true threat to Paul comes to his lover, Chani, and the unborn heir to his family's dynasty。。。

Pretty good but not as good as Dune

I am a fan of the dimensionality of this science fiction。 It interweaves fanatic religion, shrewd politicking, undying love, and bloodline obligations to create a story that transcends fiction into reality。 It makes me think about how pious believers can turn into traitors as long as they can interpret it for the greater good (which coincidentally also justifies their needs)。 The writing sways beautifully between strength and tenderness, of Paul having to fulfil his obligations as an Atreides, a I am a fan of the dimensionality of this science fiction。 It interweaves fanatic religion, shrewd politicking, undying love, and bloodline obligations to create a story that transcends fiction into reality。 It makes me think about how pious believers can turn into traitors as long as they can interpret it for the greater good (which coincidentally also justifies their needs)。 The writing sways beautifully between strength and tenderness, of Paul having to fulfil his obligations as an Atreides, as Muad Dib, but all he wants is to be the partner of his love。 。。。more

Dune Messiah is an inversion to the original Dune。 In Dune, Paul rises to power by seizing control of the single critical resource in the universe, melange。 In Dune Messiah, Paul takes the reins of power to try to bring a hard but enlightened peace to the universe。 This book sees Paul's rise to power, trying to maintain it against internal conspiracies all around him。 You are plunged into the conspiracy plot to try and overthrow Paul, from the very first page。 It is a good story, very clever, ho Dune Messiah is an inversion to the original Dune。 In Dune, Paul rises to power by seizing control of the single critical resource in the universe, melange。 In Dune Messiah, Paul takes the reins of power to try to bring a hard but enlightened peace to the universe。 This book sees Paul's rise to power, trying to maintain it against internal conspiracies all around him。 You are plunged into the conspiracy plot to try and overthrow Paul, from the very first page。 It is a good story, very clever, however, for me, the story doesn’t have the narrative flow of Dune。 If you love a good conspiracy, I do, then this delivers on the machinations and politics and counterplot。 It does at times feel like an overly complex book。 The plot isn't quite as strong as the original Dune epic plot, but it never was going to be。 You feel Herbert deliberately made the plot and narrative decisions to go in a different direction。 I feel it was very brave。 I loved the plot to overthrow Paul as emperor and then have control over the spice。 I am definitely not a sci-fi reader but Dune is epic, so much so, I could easily become a sci-fi fan。 I’m really looking forward to reading Children of Dune。 。。。more

Loved it! Felt like reading the second one for some reason and。 Do。 Not。 Regret。 It。 Watched the film yesterday and THAT IS AMAZING!!! Anyway the book, loved it, the ending is something and felt bad for chani during the majority of the book。

The first book was just shy of bad; the second was just shy of good。 I would give this a 2。5 if I could。 There are so many wincey, eye-roll-y moments, so much drug-induced gibberish shrouding any substance a sober person can track, and so little actual character-building。 Yet, I'm still curious about what happens next。 Let's see if I have the stamina to make it through the next book。 The first book was just shy of bad; the second was just shy of good。 I would give this a 2。5 if I could。 There are so many wincey, eye-roll-y moments, so much drug-induced gibberish shrouding any substance a sober person can track, and so little actual character-building。 Yet, I'm still curious about what happens next。 Let's see if I have the stamina to make it through the next book。 。。。more

A hard book to rate because of course it falls way short of the original Dune novel, but it was more Dune goodness and it was never boring, so I'll go all in with five stars。 Just be warned that it is a bit slower than Dune (even thought it is much shorter) and that Herbert wrote it with the intention of being the opposite of Dune; where Dune was basically a triumphant heroes journey, this book is basically a tragedy。 A hard book to rate because of course it falls way short of the original Dune novel, but it was more Dune goodness and it was never boring, so I'll go all in with five stars。 Just be warned that it is a bit slower than Dune (even thought it is much shorter) and that Herbert wrote it with the intention of being the opposite of Dune; where Dune was basically a triumphant heroes journey, this book is basically a tragedy。 。。。more

Yes I was interested in enough in the Dune franchise to read the second book。 No I was not interested enough in Dune Messiah to give it a rating any better than 3 stars。So I would rate this a solid 2。5 stars, it was originally going to be just 2 but I think the ending was better than the first book so I bumped it up。 A few extraneous reasons as to why I might not have enjoyed this as much as the first is the fact that I got an 82 on my philosophy essay in personhood and death and that REALLY bum Yes I was interested in enough in the Dune franchise to read the second book。 No I was not interested enough in Dune Messiah to give it a rating any better than 3 stars。So I would rate this a solid 2。5 stars, it was originally going to be just 2 but I think the ending was better than the first book so I bumped it up。 A few extraneous reasons as to why I might not have enjoyed this as much as the first is the fact that I got an 82 on my philosophy essay in personhood and death and that REALLY bummed me out。 But you know, you snooze you lose, you feel dread over the fact that no matter how hard you try。。 you lose。 Whatareyougonnado。 Another reason is that the version I'm reading is the book printed in the dusty 70's/80's from my local library and although I love good Ol' Pollard Memorial, this small ass rigid book was giving To Kill A Mockingbird sophomore year vibes。 Her spine arch was stiff as a board and it made for some difficulty in reading。But let's talk about the actual story yeah? I can't talk about my qualms without discussing specific events in the book that bugged me so this will be pretty spoiler-heavy。 My brain is kind of dead so I apologize if this makes literally no sense。(view spoiler)[First of all there were some incestuous vibes coming from Paul looking at Alia naked that I was not a fan of at all。 If they kept that just to the Reverend Mother and the breeding program I would have been fine but they DIDN'T。 Second of all, There was literally no Jessica in this book。 Are you freaking kidding me? You're going to give her one letter where she's portraying the paradoxical relations of morality and law and that's IT? Jessica and Alia were they only reasons I wanted to read this book and Alia is like hypersexualized like an anime character so I was not a fan and needed some of Jessica's swag。 Like I loved the character of Duncan/Hayt and thought we should have gotten just a little bit more of him because the majority of his involvement is in the last 60 pages which is why I bumped my rating up。 But like, making him fuck a 15 year old is not fun to read even if she has centuries' worth of consciousness! The moral implications of Duncan's identity, death and rebirth are super interesting but coupling that with Alia's growth into womanhood just was not cool。 Here's another thing, there's no。。 plot happening? Like you get plunged into the first scene and think that you're going to follow a whole new cast of characters devising assassinations and conspiracies but then they never regroup and Irulan and Scytale who in my opinion are the most interesting, are never deeply explored as characters。 I thought there was a lot of potential to explore the universe through a new set of eyes and you think you're getting that, and then you don't。 It was disappointing to say the least。 I guess you could say that the plot is the conspiracy against Paul and his offspring but I truly think that this was just a bunch of world building and stuff happening one after another without any overarching interest。 Maybe upon a reread I'll be more interested but I don't predict that happening to be honest and this book honestly does not make me want to start the third。 I JUST DON'T CARE ABOUT PAUL! And then when you get Alia she's just a little bitch。 Everybody in this book talks so complexly and even though it's the same language as the first, here it just feels like so much more annoying whereas in the first, I didn't feel like I was being talked down to。 And Chani is not any better she's SO annoying and I hate that every scene is just her talking wanting a baby。 Like Jessica was so strong and powerful in the first book and then all the female characters in this book are just like, not their own people at all! The miniscule amount of feminism we have is wholly forgotten。 The first book was also better at explaining things maybe because it had an appendix but I still find it difficult to imagine what Edric looks like and I don't completely understand the role of the Tleilaxu。 Easily my favorite part of the book is the ghola plotline but everything else was just not compelling enough for me to feel super invested。 If the first book was a slow burn, this was barely even a spark。 It was like reading paint dry and then sometimes my mom would walk in and ask if I wanted food i。e。 every scene with Duncan。 But yeah。 That's Dune Messiah。 Don't recommend。 Honestly just watch a summary that is going to save you time and probably be much more interesting。 If Paul's not actually dead in Children of Dune I will kill myself!! (hide spoiler)] Oh also the Dune movie was good I love being Zendaya-baited :) 。。。more

This one was good, but not better than the original。 It’s a bit shorter and not as entertaining but it still holds up。

compared to 1st one, this book was weaker and it felt like some insertion after 1st。 it also hard to write review for continuations because of spoilers, but i will try。paul was arrogant and overconfidence as usual。 sometimes he really irritated me。 Some scenes with him was boring, because he already knew everything, so i couldnt be invested in future development of him as a character and whole situation。 some dialog literally look like: something happenedsome character: we need to do something w compared to 1st one, this book was weaker and it felt like some insertion after 1st。 it also hard to write review for continuations because of spoilers, but i will try。paul was arrogant and overconfidence as usual。 sometimes he really irritated me。 Some scenes with him was boring, because he already knew everything, so i couldnt be invested in future development of him as a character and whole situation。 some dialog literally look like: something happenedsome character: we need to do something with it, what about。。。? paul: no, things will be as they suppose to be, i see it。end of sceneso this was weird and i felt like paul become rather boring character during this book。 he was already so perfect that he became stale。 on the other hand i liked how author developed side characters and they were interesting to follow。this book was short and packed with actions, so narrative of this one was fast passed。 with all this book was packed with political intrigues, but those werent my cup of tea。 i felt like some bits were really well done and some turns of the plot were unexpected and interesting。 ending was intriguing too。 i had mixed feeling about this book after all, but i want to read 3rd one, because i`m curious what next author had prepared。 。。。more

A book that I find very hard to rate。 The first Dune novel was a pure masterpiece, above all doubt。 I found this book harder to get into and harder to follow, even though I was already familiar with the world。 It's really not a pageturner, but still fascinating though。 I'm curious about the rest of the Dune books! More political than the first, dives into the implications of the events that took place。 Still great, but not on the level of 1&3

According to the introduction, this book is functionally a prelude to the third novel, hence it's short length。 The narrative is mostly populated by long, arduous sequences of psychological jousting and very abstract examinations of Paul's inner turmoil - not much really seems to happen until the last 20 pages of the book。 This just felt like a very economically-written, lightweight extension cord to another epic Dune novel so I guess three stars is fair。 According to the introduction, this book is functionally a prelude to the third novel, hence it's short length。 The narrative is mostly populated by long, arduous sequences of psychological jousting and very abstract examinations of Paul's inner turmoil - not much really seems to happen until the last 20 pages of the book。 This just felt like a very economically-written, lightweight extension cord to another epic Dune novel so I guess three stars is fair。 。。。more

3。5 StarsThis novel , which is half the length of the first one in the series ,basically narrates that any ruler who reigns for a lengthy period will have issues to retain his power。The human who was elevated to God status in the previous novel is found out to be having feet of clay。 The Dune universe is highly addictive。 It’s going to be an uphill task to stay away from the rest in the series。

Very different but equally satisfying to the original。 I just loved getting into the mind of Paul Atreides。 This very much was a book that covered the fall out of the first novel as well as set the stage for the sequel。 I read this in two sitting and loved every page。 Such a good take on the whole chosen one complex。

I really liked Dune, and the sequel is nice because it immerses you in Dune's world again, but a lot of what made the original special is missing from Dune Messiah。 Part of the fun of Dune was discovering this new planet and all of the different ways of life that existed in this imagined future。 Dune Messiah doesn't really add to this save for a few technological advancements - you are on Arrakis the whole time and only hear vague reference to everything that's gone on elsewhere over the last de I really liked Dune, and the sequel is nice because it immerses you in Dune's world again, but a lot of what made the original special is missing from Dune Messiah。 Part of the fun of Dune was discovering this new planet and all of the different ways of life that existed in this imagined future。 Dune Messiah doesn't really add to this save for a few technological advancements - you are on Arrakis the whole time and only hear vague reference to everything that's gone on elsewhere over the last decade。 I also did not enjoy all the dialogue (which was a good portion of the book) between various characters that seemed to be a mix of philosophy, multiverse theory, riddles, and nonsense (or maybe it just went over my head!)。 There also weren't really any new characters that were exciting to meet, with the exception of a grown up Alia。 The book was a quick read, and I enjoy this universe, but I think this installment would have been better served with a simpler delivery and more action。 。。。more

In a lot of ways this is an essential companion to Dune, and the first book doesn't quite make sense without it。 Where Dune is bold and heroic, Dune Messiah is a tragedy, rounding out the story of Paul as he finally manages to escape from the machinations of history。 The expected direction for this book to take would have been another grand adventure story following Paul's conquest on known space, but instead Herbert skips over all that is and turns inward to tell an engaging human drama。This is In a lot of ways this is an essential companion to Dune, and the first book doesn't quite make sense without it。 Where Dune is bold and heroic, Dune Messiah is a tragedy, rounding out the story of Paul as he finally manages to escape from the machinations of history。 The expected direction for this book to take would have been another grand adventure story following Paul's conquest on known space, but instead Herbert skips over all that is and turns inward to tell an engaging human drama。This is also a much better written book。 Dune is wild and messy and takes chances that don't always work, but by Dune Messiah Herbert has honed his writing to a razor's edge。 The concepts on display are also pretty astonishing。 The whole concept of a clone struggling between his present identity and the man people remember him as is brilliant, as is the idea of a messianic leader who must support a horrific crusade unwillingly purely because the alternative could be even worse。 。。。more

A glimpse of the dark side of a god like leader, Dune Messiah was a reality check on the epic of Paul Atreides。 I found this one highly enjoyable if not as entertaining as Dune。
